So, You Want a Bob Too?

Sunday, February 1, 2015

A lot of you have been asking how I style my hair, what I ask for when I get a cut, and where I get it all done. Here I will tell you all the "secrets!"

I personally like the simplicity that comes from having a bob. I don't have to do nearly as much to it as when I had long hair to make it look presentable each day and it has a clean, chic look, which I feel I only used to be able to achieve with updos.

Sam Rollinson                                               Rose Byrne

I had, for years, tried pinning my long hair back, tucking it into sweaters, and so on, feigning a bob. I would run to my friends asking "Should I cut it? It would look kind of like this." It was always a yes, but no matter how much assurance I received from my confidants, I remained too scared to just do it.

I read in Vogue years ago that too many young girls hide their loveliness behind their long hair. "It's like a security blanket for them," said the interviewee, unknowingly diagnosing my girlish fears. He was absolutely right. *(If you have long hair, love it, and actually wear it down and embrace it, that is amazing. I'm not going to try to convince you to chop it off. This, I remind you, is for those who have been hesitant about cutting it or not). The only reason I, personally, did not want to cut my hair was the fear of losing it and having to wait years to grow it back. Also, of not being able to wear it up, but the reason I was always wearing my long hair up was to show off more of my face/keep it out of the way. I now realize the best way to do that is to just have a lot less hair to begin with.

I've had a few people cut my hair, so in all honesty you do not have to find the same salon or the same hairdresser as any of the pictured women (or even myself) to get a haircut like this. (I've actually cut my own hair a couple of time between visits!) It is incredibly simple and just about anyone will be able to realize the desired look. Here is what I say when I go to whatever salon:
"I would like a blunt, chin length bob, same length all around, with long layers." Presto!

I think the exact cut looks fabulous with bangs, as well. If you want an edgier, more 60s version, I would add some shaggy blunt bangs, like Sam Rollinson, above.

When it comes to styling my hair everyday, I am not picky when it comes to products. Right now, I'm using John Freida shampoo and conditioner, then after the shower, I take a pea sized amount of conditioner and tousle it through my towel dried hair. That's it!

Now, I understand everyone has different hair types. If I want my bob to be curly and voluminous, or even pin straight, I obviously have to do some work. My hair is just slightly wavy for the most part. For a night out, I will have to use some Suave hairspray and scrunch it, as well as Dove dry shampoo at the roots for volume. Those of you with very curly hair looking to make it straighter may be using hair dryers and flat irons now. (Although a curly bob also looks wonderful in my opinion.) I imagine you will just style it like you would with your long locks: it will just take a shorter amount of time.

Cutting your long hair can be a liberating experience, in addition to being a physically flattering one. Coco Chanel once said "A girl who cuts her hair is about to change her life." The cut may be reflective of you making a big change in another aspect of your life, or it could even be the big change itself. You are ready to embrace something new and you are realizing that change is good. If you have been contemplating cutting off all of your hair or even a few more inches than usual, I say give it a try.

The only "downside" to having a bob is that you have to have it cut approximately every two months. At least, that is what I do. This seems like a lot of time at the hairdresser after being used to going every five months or so. The thing is, you use far less shampoo, spend so much less time in the shower, less time drying and styling, and only more time looking at your nice hair in the mirror! Also, you deserve to go to the salon more because you are beautiful and great and it is fun.

  1. AHH I want to cut my hair but Im super nervous I will look funny because of my chubby cheeks!!

  2. Love! I cut my hair a month ago because I came across your Instagram and fell in love with the style! So, thanks! And love your blog.

  3. I cut my hair like yours in September and I have been loving it ever since! I have trimmed it 2 times in between but now I miss having a ponytail and may grow it out shoulder length, but this post makes me want to trim it again! Haha btw thanks for all the great posts!

  4. Will you marry me please?

    Sincerely yours,

    A fan

  5. I actually related to this post soo much! When I was thinking about getting a bob I was asking everyone about what they thought I would look like, and almost everything said "yes, it'll look grait on you" but I was still afraid. Long short story, I cutted it and I LOVED IT! It was so refreshing because I always had long hair and it's a weight off my shoulders, I've never felt so good about myself as I do now, so thank you because you're the one who inspired it haha the thing is, I'm kind of tired of not being able to pull up my hair anymore, so I want to let it grow but at the same time I don't because I really like it! What would you recomend me to do? Pardon my english but my main laguage is spanish haha have a nice week! :)

  7. I can relate to this post so much. My hair was down to the middle of my back, frizzy and I did not know what to do with it. I finally had the courage to cut it in the style of a bob and I have never looked back. I do not miss my long hair. Personally I also think you look more professional with a nice bob or shoulder length hairstyle. Love your posts! They are so relatable!

  8. How cute! I'm planning on dyeing it next year and when it's dead, chop it off with a bob. Ans this post convinced me even more. Thank u, lovely!

  9. I have been putting it off for ages now. Time to let the locks go!

  13. Oh wait. I think you already answered that question.. i forgot to notify it. thanks anyway! :)

  14. Just to throw it out there - you and your amazing hair are one of the main reasons why I cut my hair. I'd kept it long for about 4 years (it went all the way down to my bum!) and i was always thinking about cutting it but i never had the guts to do it. Until I found your blog! It serisously feels AMAZING to have short hair - i feel more mature, elegantnand chic! So thank you, for the positive influence! :D

  15. I am OBSESSED with your hair! I recently got mine cut just like it and it's adorable. What products do you use to maintain it? Also what do you use to style your hair when you do the slick back hair look? It's so cute and chic!
