Good Summer Reads for Opening Your Mind

Thursday, June 2, 2016

This is a list of my favorite books from the past year, in case you're interested in delving into something new over the summer. Most of these books changed the way I think. I don't say that lightly either, because in doing so, I really mean that they changed my life.

Fiction:
The Jungle by Upton Sinclair

I have never been so moved by a book in my life. If you were a robot, you still couldn't help but feel the deepest empathy possible. The story revolves around a strong-willed, ├╝ber masculine, Eastern European immigrant, Jurgis, supporting his family in the early-1900s Chicago meat-packing district. Despite his own vigor, the horrific slaughterhouse conditions, ghastly traps and confusions of a foreign country, and corrupt American wage system create nye insurmountable obstacles for Jurgis. The book notably gives deep insight into factory conditions for animals and workers alike in industrial America.

Spirituality & Personal Destiny:
Power vs. Force by David Hawkins
Transcending the Levels of Consciousness by David Hawkins

I'll describe these as a pair, as I think if you read one, you will probably read the other. At least I think you should. I read the latter first, but Power vs. Force actually precedes it. Both are aimed at helping you reach full consciousness, awareness, and to help you alleviate any and all suffering in your life purely based on the way you view the world. They will help you see in a more objective way than subjective, help you empathize, and help you learn to forgive yourself (and others) in every way. They are both pretty dense reads, but well worth the double-reading of paragraphs to get the grasp of what he's saying.

Astrology for the Soul by Jan Spiller

I only read the section for my own zodiac sign (about 30 pages), as this is a reference book containing all signs. That being said, even though you may not read the whole thing, it's the most accurate astrology text I've personally come across. It does not analyze your Sun sign, which is based on the month you were born in, but instead on your North Node sign. AKA your emotional sign, which is allegedly formed on the basis of your past incarnations. It's very interesting, and whether or not you believe in such things, it can still help you learn a lot about why you feel the ways you do in most situations, and how to accept it. There are a lot of "No way... How do they know that? So crazy accurate" moments. It won't predict your future, but it will tell you more about... you... now.

Health:
The China Study by Dr. Colin Campbell

The documentary, Forks Over Knives, was created revolving around this study. Two Cornell professors went to China to study the disparity of cancer rates between wealthy and non-wealthy inhabitants. Essentially, they discover that animal protein is the only major variable consumptive difference between the two groups, and conclude that animal protein is linked to cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and premature aging. The science and method dictated here is really amazing. Vegan or not, this will really make you think about what goes in your body.

  8. Hello! I've been looking for a blog like this for ages. I must say that you inspire me and seem to be very intelligent and kind person. It is a really rare thing nowadays and thank you for that :) Power vs. Force by David Hawkins sounds interesting and I would like to give it a go!

Some time ago you were asking us about our skin rituals, claiming that you like reading about such things. I've recently discovered the all-natural peeling which leaves your skin as smooth as it can be. First, I take some coconout oil and warm it in my hands. When it changes its state to liquid, I take some apricot kernel powder and mix it with the oil. Then, I put it on my face and massage it for a minute or so. Finally, I wash my face with water and it's so smooth! When I'm done, I may put some avocado/grape seed/almond oil and I leave it overnight.

In Poland, where I leave, apricot seed kernel powder is relatively easy to find (online, at least) and is very cheap (around 2-3$) and coconout oil is veeeeery cheap. AND THEY LAST SO LONG!

Once again, I love your blog and I can't wait for the next post. You seem so genuine its unreal! x

  15. I have been itching to read books on spirituality, as I'm still relatively new to it all (I've been experiencing more than I've been reading about it), so I will start with those because I trust your taste. Great post once again! :D
