A Week of Face Washing

Monday, August 22, 2016

When it comes to skincare, I believe my routine is always improving. I'm learning more about my face and skin, it even changes over time/with age. I'm hearing more tips and tricks from models and makeup artists, and the world is constantly creating more products to experiment with. There's no reason to think one way is the permanent right way. That being said, my routine has changed a bit in the past few months into what I think is the best routine I've ever had. It's not extremely different from anything I've done. It's a little mix of old and new. Here goes...
Morning:
I have no makeup or anything on first thing in the morning, as I always cleanse before bed. Because of this, I either just
A) rinse my face with warm water & pat dry OR
B) if I wake up really oily, use a cream cleanser with salicylic acid, like Neutrogena "Oil Free Acne Wash" Pink Grapefruit Cream Cleanser (available at most drugstores for $6)
Next, I use witch hazel on a cotton pad and wipe my face before applying moisturizer and SPF 50.

Night (Tuesdays and Thursdays):
I'm really into getting absolutely everything off my face before bed. 2-3 times per week I will use my Clarisonic Mia 2 to really shake everything out of my pores. I wasn't convinced on the Clarisonic until I heard that pollutant particles can be 30 times smaller than your pores, so they pack in there pretty deep. Maybe I'm a slight germaphobe but that grosses me out a LOT. Especially in the city, where pollutants run rampant. I've absolutely noticed a difference in my skin's texture and the appearance of my pores since consistently using it.
On the nights I use the device, I essentially wash my face twice.
A) Once with a gel cleanser (Sephora Purify & Cleanse Gel is great), just using my hands, to get any makeup and sunscreen off, rinse, THEN
B) I wet my face again, rub a bit of the gel cleanser on my face, then put a drop of the gel on my wet Clarisonic and run one 60 second cycle all over my face in light, circular motions. Then rinse.
Like usual, I then use witch hazel and moisturize.

All the other nights:
Every day I don't use that, I just wash my face with a gel cleanser to get the makeup off, rinse, then I use the same Neutrogena Cream Cleanser I used in the morning, except I leave it on for two minutes to really clear my pores out. You'll feel a tingly, cold sensation, which is really nice and gives the illusion that it's doing something magical.
Essentially, I always wash TWICE at night. Once to remove makeup and again for a deep clean. I really believe in getting almost squeaky clean skin so I know my serum & moisturizing products are being properly absorbed, and aren't just sitting on top of dead, dirty skin cells all night. I think it can work for everybody. If you have really dry skin, once might be enough, but give it a try and see how you feel.

  1. Witch Hazel toner has been a life saver !! I use this lilac scented one and it's the best thing I've ever smelled !! I've thought about investing in a clarisonic too but I've heard a lot of conflicting opinions on it!!

    1. I've been using mostly Caudalie products this year, the vitamin C serum in the green bottle and the vinosource creme sorbet for sensitive skin. I actually just ran out of both. Although I ADORE the serum, I think I'm going to shop around for a new moisturizer, at least a new one for night, as this one is a little too light for my taste :) I'll write a post once I find a good replacement xox

  5. if you like witch hazel you might like the Geranium and Orange Blossom balance toner, by a little Canadian brand based in Toronto called Wildcraft. Not to sound like an ad, but its 100% Organic & natural ingredients, and if you look at the ingredient list of the product its a very logical toner being that they are intended for balancing the skin. I personally love it

  7. I have been needing to create a skincare routine for myself because I haven't had access to my usual products from home, and having been living in a different environment for the summer (humid Miami vs. dry SoCal where I'm from), my skin has changed a lot and become oilier. I can't ever seem to clean it enough! I need to do some research on the Clarisonic and other exfoliators. Your skin is so radiant Dayna! :D

    1. Thank you!! Yes do some research on it. I know there's a lot of conflicting evidence and it's a big investment. It might work differently on different people too xox

  8. I can't wash twice without over exfoliating my skin too much, even with gentle cleansers or just water, sometimes even my hands alone are too much. it makes my skin look plasticy almost

    1. For me, definitely. It really changes the texture of your skin and helps you absorb products properly. I would do some research though. It does have some conflicting reviews

  10. Duo you use any eye creams of night creams? Or any face oils? Wondering if I should start investing in the little extras other than just the basics..

    1. I'm going to do a post on it soon, but I just started using Sunday Riley "Tidal" cream over my Caudalie Vinosource Serum at night to really quench my skin, and it's been great. In terms of eye cream, I haven't adopted it into my own routine yet. Even though some swear it's essential, I just like to put one serum and one cream all over my face; eye area included :)

    1. You should really try "La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60"!
      1. Its SPH 60 and it goes on sheer! It's also fragrance and paraben-free so thats a plus as well.

I'd really look into it! Xx

    1. You know, to be honest I'm not a consistent eye cream user. I've used the Caudalie Vinosource and I like it a lot, but I usually just spread my moisturizer around my eye area. I haven't yet come across an eye cream that did any better :)

  14. Hey Dayna, just wondering what brand sunscreen you use. I've been on the hunt for a good sunscreen, but havent' found any I like :c. Any recommendations?

    1. I use plain old Walgreens brand baby sunscreen :) I've used it for like five years now. It's so gentle. I know it probably has some unsavory chemicals in it, but it sits really nicely on my skin and doesn't get dusty like some face sunscreens I've used xoxo
